Esther McVey has called on Premier League clubs to do more to support grassroots football and clubs struggling to stay afloat.
She said the money would make a huge difference to clubs both players and fans, and by also giving to grassroots clubs it allowed anyone wanting to get involved to have the opportunity to play.
Speaking in Common’s Culture, Media and Sport Question time Ms McVey said: “Given the huge riches in the Premier League shouldn’t there be a greater expectation that more money flows down into grassroots level football and non-league clubs like Knutsford FC and Witton Albion in my constituency, who work unbelievably hard just to stay afloat. Especially as so many of those premier league footballers live just up the road from those two clubs.”
Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock said Ms McVey made an important point but it was up to clubs to decide how much money they gave.
