Esther presents cheque

Alderley Edge Village Show has been handed £250 after Esther McVey took part in a charity bet on the Aintree, Grand National.

Dozens of MPs took up the offer of a free £50 charity bet on the world-famous steeplechase, funded by the Betting and Gaming Council as part of its Grand National Charity Bet Campaign which raises money for good causes up and down the country.

Ms McVey bet on Iroko at Ladbrokes shop in Wilmslow Road. Despite it being one of the favourites in the race and trained in Cheshire, Iroko came forth.

Even so Ms McVey's chosen charity - Alderley Edge Village Show - was still a winner and was handed a donation of £250 from BGC for her participation.

Ms McVey said: “The Alderley Edge Village Show is a fantastic annual event enjoyed by so many and I am delighted they are benefiting from this donation. It was a pleasure to hand over the cheque and I look forward to attending the show later this month.”

This year's Grand National was watched by around 600 million people across more than 140 countries, with an estimated 13 million adults in the UK having a flutter on the big race.

Betting and Gaming Council CEO Grainne Hurst said: “The Grand National is one of the very few global sporting occasions with the power to bring the whole nation together, spurred on by the history, the heritage and the incredible spectacle it offers.

“I’m glad we could help raise thousands of pounds for excellent causes across the country including the Alderley Edge Village Show.”
