26 Jul Well, would you believe it …..Some dairy data!
On entering my new dairy-free world, I was pleased to find a wide array of alternatives, and not just in health food shops but in supermarkets too. And as I gazed at the selection, everything from rice to almond, soya to coconut, I wondered just how many others like me were out there swapping milk for plant based alternatives.
Wow, I was surprised to see the scale of change. Worldwide sales of non-dairy milk alternatives have more than doubled between 2009 and 2015 (Euromonitor)
In Europe sales of almond, coconut, rice and oat milk have doubled in 5 years
Australasia it rose 3 fold and in North America sales went up 9 fold. (Euromonitor)
The shift to alternatives are not just about intolerances, people’s concerns range from saturated fat levels to hormone levels, antibiotic levels as well as the treatment of animals.
So big are these drinking pattern changes that global drinks companies have entered the field. They predict a change to ‘up market milk’ and plant based alternatives will be the fastest growing segment in the drinks market in the next 5-10 years.
In the US, per capita, milk consumption has dropped 13% over 5 years and in Europe it’s been 4.1%.
Sales of non dairy ice cream in the US leapt 44% in the last 12 months to May while ice cream sales grew 3%.
2/3 of ice cream eaters said they’d be interested in non-dairy alternatives (Mintel) and many said they’d be prepared to pay more.
That’s a lot of change for a lot of people.
